In this dissertation I argue the case for placing children's reading of non-fiction in the\ud context of the whole language and learning programme. The emphasis is on supporting\ud reflective reading rather than only on the acquisition of study skills. An action inquiry,\ud involving a whole class of 9 year olds using non-fiction in the context of project work,\ud is described and evaluated by the writer as teacher-researcher.\ud The study is in three parts. Part 1 begins with a short analysis of the present state of\ud affairs, then proceeds to an examination of different theoretical approaches to learning and\ud particularly the role of language in learning.
