The human calcitonin/α-CGRP gene is expressed in a tissue-specific manner; the C cells of the thyroid produce calcitonin, whilst specific subsets of neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system make CGRP. In certain tumours, in particular those of the lung, this tissue-specificity is lost and the gene is ectopically expressed. The mechanism of ectopic expression is of particular interest as it may provide insights into the processes regulating gene expression in the normal and transformed state.
