In 2010, the food processing industry contributed about 10% of the Malaysian manufacturing output attracted a total of RM1.972 billion in 69 projects. Employment in the processed food and beverages industry decreased in 2009 by 5.1% to 43,080 compared with 45,418 in 2008. Small and medium sized enterprises represent more than 80% of the total number of establishments in the processed food segment. In Malaysia, McDonald’s is leading the food franchisor at second place to KFC, and is planning on increasing its franchisees from currently 230 to over double during the next eight years.
