This study examines the issue of sustainable tourism development in the case of Barbados. As part of the background analysis, the study begins by defining what is meant by tourism and discussing its benefits and costs. It then goes on to analyse trends in the tourism industry at both the global and regional level. In this regard, it shows tourism as the largest and fastest growing industry in the world and as being the most important sector for many countries, particularly developing countries. The analysis is then narrowed to Barbados where the evolution and structure of the industry is discussed in detail.
