Following World War II the European continent was razed to the ground. The war brought about sixty million human deaths, massive destruction, and completely ruined the global economy. European leaders came to the conclusion that only economic and political integration of the European countries could prevent another bloody war and secure the long-lasting peace on “the old continent”.
