In the United States, approximately 50.9 million adults under the age of 64 years live with some type of disability. In 2011 approximately 21.8% of men and 28.1% of women under the age of 64 years reported living with a disability, while 53.5% of men and 63.9% of women over the age of 65 years reported living with a disability. Disability is associated with many chronic conditions including obesity, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease (heart disease), hypertension (high blood pressure), asthma, and mental illness. Living with disabilities has been associated with barriers to care and decreased utilization of preventive screenings.
