Airport investment planning in Newfoundland.

Efficient transportation planning by both public and private agencies requires an estimate of future travel demands. These estimates are dependent upon both the transportation system components and the socio-economic variables in a region. The basic problem in transportation planning is to convert existing transportation system data and socio-economic data into future travel demands. This type of planning requires a logical planning framework and a rigourous and consistent modelling technique. -- In a developmental situation, the airplane is a most desirable mode of travel because of its independence of expensive surface routes. Air travel demand for short haul trips is highly dependent upon airport location and accessibility. Before implementing any changes in airport location, the planners must be able to evaluate the consequences of various alternatives. -- This thesis describes the criteria involved in airport investment planning and outlines a logical framework for regional airport location planning. The mathematical modelling technique used in this framework is based on linear graph theory.
