Abstract

Jessica Cogar, originally from Northeast Ohio, currently resides in Oxford, Mississippi as an MFA student in poetry at the University of Mississippi. Cogar discusses her experiences living in the South as a lesbian woman in contrast to her experiences in Ohio. In this interview, Cogar recounts her love of the great outdoors and riding dirtbikes with her dad during her childhood, while also touching on her issues with navigating different kinds romantic relationships within her own writing. She explores how nature, love, and spirituality all interconnect within her work, and how she uses her art as an outlet to explore various topics that range between rural living to her sexual identity as a lesbian.
