National audienceIntroduced in the early 1990s’ by ICRP, Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRL), are helpful tools for medical imaging professionals in order to optimise the radiation exposure of patients. Implemented in France in 2004, first from European DRLs, DRLs are periodically updated by regulatory authorities. Updates are based on the results of national surveys data carried out by IRSN which is in charge of the collection and the analyses of radiation doses delivered in French medical imaging departments. After five national assessments, a regulation update in 2011 and in the perspective of an update expected in 2018, this significant experience allows France to identify strengths and weaknesses of the system implemented in 2004.
