Developing an English Learning Module for Grade XI Students of Islamic Boarding Schools

The aims of this study are: (1) to find out the English target needs of the students of Islamic boarding schools, (2) to find out the English learning needs of the students of Islamic boarding schools, (3) to develop and produce an appropriate English learning module for grade eleven students of Islamic boarding schools in the first semester. The module developed based on Curriculum 2006 will be enrichment materials to the students. This is a research and development (R&D) study. This study adopted the design of research and development proposed by Gall, Gall, & Borg (2003); Richey & Klein (2007); and Dick, Carey & Carey (2009). This study was conducted at three Islamic boarding schools in Lombok. The instruments in this research were questionnaires, observation sheets, and interview guides, the needs analysis questionnaire was used to get information about the students’ needs and the try-out questionnaire was used to obtain information about the students’ agreement towards the module. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the target needs indicate that most students prefer to the topics related to daily life, religion, and education. The learning need results show that the materials and activities needed by the students are related to Islamic contents and contexts. This module consists of three units: Natural Disasters (report text), A Long Time Ago (narrative text) and 3D: Drugs = Danger = Death (analytical text). Each unit has eight components, namely: unit title, objectives, warm-up, main activities, summary, reflection, evaluation, feedback and follow-up. The first draft was validated and revised before it was tried out. The try-out data of the second draft show that the draft is “poor” since the average score is within the data interval 1.76 ≤ ≤ 2.51. Meanwhile, the third draft is considered appropriate and applicable as indicated by average score within the interval of ≥ 3.28
