Abstract

A hybrid, 'double style' facade facing garden; The environment of Charleston has been enhanced by architectural and garden development, particularly in the period between the rebuilding after a devastating fire in 1740 and the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. Its character is set by its fine houses . Among these are ‘double houses’, such as the Miles Brewton House (1765-1769; builder, Ezra Waite), which derive from English 18th century style. They have paired rooms on either side of a central hallway and often a central porch with orders and a pediment. Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 5/1/2011
