Weaning patients from mechanical ventilation are one of the key elements in the course of the treatment of critically ill patients and could represent up to 40% of the time that a patient spends on mechanical ventilation. A prolongation of mechanical weaning is associated with increased risk of complications, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia, tracheal injury, bleeding from digestive stress ulcers and sepsis, while early extubation and reintubation could result to nosocomial pneumonia and increased mortality. Thus, identifying the optimal point when a patient can sustain spontaneous breathing is essential, but could be challenging.
