The Development of an Environmental Education Resource and Activity Guide for Teachers of Whole Language in Grades K-3

"A Resource and Activity Guide for Teachers of Whole Language in Grades K-3" was developed to assist in promoting the infusion of Environmental Education (EE) into the existing language arts program at Keshena Primary School (KPS). Prior research revealed the importance of infusion for incorporating EE into other curricular areas. The utilization of environmental literature, activity guides, and thematic units helped provide the holistic instruction necessary for the successful infusion of EE. A survey administered to KPS staff in August 1993, assessed teacher knowledge and experience in EE instruction. Based on the results of the survey and consultations with grade level representatives, twelve environmental themes were identified and developed into units consistent with the whole language philosophy. Literature lists of related trade books were also generated for each theme. Following a February 1994, inservice at which KPS staff were trained in the utilization of the Guide, a three and one-half month period was allocated for project implementation. A final survey administered in June 1994, assessed the extent of Guide utilization and viability. Results of the survey indicated that the Guide was beneficial for the infusion of EE into the whole language classroom. Teachers also indicated a continuing desire to utilize the Guide in the upcoming school year
