Energy management integration and case of study in urban environment

This report aims to serve as an example of energy behavior simulation for an office building in urban environment as a tool inside the framework of an energy management system. To do so, it is firstly presented the context of the world energy related challenges as well as the characteristics of urban environment energy management systems. Next, the attributes of the studied office building and its definition into the used software are described and the simulation model is created. Following the creation of the model, it has been simulated and validated comparing the obtained results with an energy audit of the studied building. Thanks to the creation of the simulation model, it has been possible to determine different improvement measures in order to reduce the building’s energy consumption. It has also been possible to introduce those measures into the building’s simulation model to determine its affectation before implementing them. Being possible to determine with advance the energy savings obtained from the simulations, it has been possible to realize an economic viability study to determine which of the presented improvement measures would be economically interesting for implementation. The three chosen improvement measures to be implemented have been upgrading the lighting system, upgrading the elevators and installing a thin PV window glazing. The first one proposes the substitution of the actual fluorescent technology for a more advanced low power LED technology. The second one aims to substitute the elevators to adapt them to actual technology as they have not been changed since the tower construction in 1980. The final improvement measure aims to introduce a renewable energy generation and improve the isolation of the building. If all those improvement measures where to be implemented in the building, they would report up to 1.3 GWh of energy per year and more than 280 tons of CO2. These results combined with the economic viability study have determined that it would be interesting to implement the described measures.
