An exploration into the idea that festivals and rituals enable change. Durkheim's view of society is rather static and monolithic, but societies change and develop all the time, or rather, the elements that make them do. How do societies accommodate all this change and yet persist in a recognisably similar form? The answer is that they often incorporate rites of passage, ritual mechanisms that allow individuals to move from one stage of life to another without threatening the stability of the whole
