Feeding newborns has changed throughout the history of humankind, depending on the culture and historical period. In several occasions, we find alternatives to maternal lactation, such as mercenary breastfeeding by wet nurses. However, another possibility is still under considerable discussion : the discovery of feeding bottles. The archaeological discovery of clay vessels of similar appearance to our present-day baby bottles has generated a heated and intense debate about their potential use as an alternative to breastfeeding.
