Local Roman Women in Pontus and Bithynia

This paper is about how women in Pontus et Bithynia appear with Roman names, even with names imitating tria nomina, in honorific and funeral inscriptions set up to themselves, their sons, fathers or their husbands. It has been commonly believed that Greeks were reluctant or skeptic towards the influence from Rome, and provincials in Greek communities made an effort to uphold their Greek cultural identity. That is often true. But the use of Roman names to female members of the family was one way to demonstrate a belonging to the Roman community and it shows how the influence from Rome affected one of the strongest markers of identity, how one refers to oneself and one’s children.Cet article traite de la manière dont certaines femmes du Pont et de Bithynie apparaissent pourvues de noms romains, imitant même parfois les tria nomina, dans les inscriptions honorifiques et funéraires qui sont dédiées à elles-mêmes ou à leurs fils, pères et époux. Il a souvent été avancé que les Grecs avaient montré quelque réticence, voire quelque scepticisme, envers l’influence de la culture romaine, et que les habitants des communautés provinciales hellénophones avaient fait un effort particulier pour préserver leur identité culturelle. Cela a souvent été vrai. Mais le choix de donner des noms romains à des membres féminins de la parenté a pu être aussi une façon de manifester l’appartenance de la famille à la communauté des citoyens romains. Cette étude souligne l’influence que Rome a pu exercer sur l’un des plus forts marqueurs identitaires, celui au moyen duquel chaque individu souhaite être identifié et reconnu, ainsi que ses enfants.Majbom Madsen Jesper.
