National audienceAn original method to assess Plasmodiophora brassicae populations in soil is described ; the principle consists of detecting the pathogen with very susceptible plants grown in conditions optimal for clubroot development. Chinese cabbage seedlings were grown for 6 weeks, either in a standard soil infested with increasing levels of P. brassicae resting spores, or in a mixture of different proportions of non-infested standard soil with the soil for analysis. After cropping, the P. brassicae resting spore density (x1) and the proportion of soil for analysis (x2) in the standard soil producing a disease index of 50 % was estimated.
