International audienceIn its successive editions of 1799 and 1835, the Dictionary of the French Academy explained infamy as a stigma printed on honor, on reputation, either on the law or on public opinion. He cites as examples: "Rate infamy. Encourage infamy. This is infamous. This punishment carried away infamous. Cover someone with infamy. The infom is is not to the death of 1835 also proposed: "Living in infamy" and speaking of an "infamous, dishonorable": "driving infamy". In both editions, the word power still meaning "vile, shameful, unworthy of an honest man" and this interpretation are found in the examples to the marked moral connotation.
