Feeding the growing global population without compromising the long-term productivity and resilience of agroecosystems is a great challenge for global food production. A common view is that optimized nutrient management is central for achieving this goal. This thesis studies the problem of how to manage the long-term nutrition of crop production in a socially optimal way. All the essays in this dissertation rely on mathematical/statistical modeling and dynamic economic optimization. The thesis provides a theoretical and empirical framework for analyzing the influence of soil nutrient dynamics and the externalities on the socially optimal long-term nutrient management in crop production.
