Identitet och tillhörighet för arabisktalande andra generationens invandrare - En studie om hur arabisktalande andra generationens invandrare upplever sin tillhörighet och identitet i det svenska samhället

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to find out and illustrate how Arabic-speaking secondgeneration immigrants define themselves and experience their identity and sense of belonging in Swedish society. I further intend to highlight how the social environment and society influence their perception of their identity and belonging. In addition, I want to find out what significance do prejudice, stereotypes and norms have on their self-perception and their perception of the society in which they live. To achieve my aim, I used qualitative method. I conducted five semi-structured interviews to collect the data. To analyse the collected data, I used three different theories, Nader Ahmadi's model of the subjective and objective identity, Vanessa May’s theory of belonging, and Sara Ahmed's theoretical concept "To pass as". The results of my study showed, among other things, that the social environment plays a large role on the individuals’ identities and their sense of belonging. Thus, norms, stereotypes, and prejudices have a decisive influence on the individuals’ self-perceptions and degree of belonging
