Ecophysiologie de la reproduction chez la crevette Penaeus japonicus, trois années d'expérience en milieu contrôlé

The studies of the influence of external factors interfering in the reproduction of crustacean are still very few, especially those in which two factors act simultaneously on the physiological processes of the reproduction. The role of two external factors, photoperiod and temperature, involved in the induction of sexual maturation and spawning, has been studied experimentally for a penaeid species of wide geographical distribution, the prawn Penaeus japonicus Bate. About sixty couples of prawns belonging to two different year-classes, 1973 and 1974, which had never reproduced before for different reasons, have been used for the experiment. The two year-classes have been reared in France from postlarvae introduced directly from Japan, therefore coming from wild parents. These two year-classes of animals have allowed the setting up of three series of experiments, males and females of both stocks, being distributed in three identical rearing tanks. In each tank, photoperiod and temperature have been controlled in such a way to provide a hot tank with a long photoperiod (26°C and 16 hours of light per day), a cold tank with short photoperiod (20°C and 13 hrs. 30 min. of light per day). and an intermediary tank (24°C and 14 hrs. 45 min. of light per day). The two last tanks were formed at the beginning of the experiment to define the limiting conditions of maturation. Experiments started in April 1975. and the first spawnings occurred in the three tanks in mid-July of the same year. The condition existing at that time have been maintained during a few months, which enabled a definition of the optimal values of temperature and photoperiod to be made. Therefore the three experimental conditions allowed normal development of the sexual maturation. However, from a quantitative point of view, there are considerable differences between the three tanks : number and importance of spawnings show during the first 3 months a pre-eminence of tank 2 (intermediate conditions), but after 6 months the balance was different and tank 1 with high temperature and long photoperiod gave the best results. Soixante animaux appartenant à deux classes d'âges différentes (1973 et 1974) ont permis la réalisation de trois séries d'expériences. Dans chacun des trois bacs utilisés, on a fait varier la photopériode et la température, les autres conditions étant identiques, de manière à réaliser un bac chaud à photophase longue (26°C et 16 heures d'éclairement quotidien), un bac froid à photophase courte (20°C et 13 h 30 mn d'éclairement quotidien) et un bac intermédiaire (24°C et 14 h 45 mn d'éclairement journalier). Les expériences ont débuté en avril 1975, et les premières pontes ont été obtenues dans les trois bacs à la mi-juillet suivante. Les conditions existant a cette date ont été maintenues durant quelques mois, ce qui a permis de définir des valeurs optimales. Du point de vue quantitatif, il y a des différences sensibles entre les trois bacs : le nombre et l'importance des pontes montrent au cours des 3 premiers mois une prééminence du bac 2 (conditions écologiques moyennes), mais après 6 mois d'expérience, c'est le bac 1 à photophase et température élevée qui donne les meilleurs résultats.
