The purpose of the investigation was to determine how well students learn a highly manipulative skill without direct teacher help. Programed instruction and single concept films were developed for use in the study. The research involved a comparison between a traditional and an experimental method to determine student learning of beginning welding. The traditional method consisted of a lecture-demonstration in which a teacher spent as much time as was required with each student teaching him to weld. The experimental method made use of programed instruction keyed to single concept film loops. These films were loaded into cassettes which made it easy for students to operate the projector. ..
