An assessment of the administrative internship program for principals in Texas based upon perceptions of public school principals

Vita.The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the administrative internship program for principals in Texas. The population included practicing public school principals in Texas, while the sample .included principals from elementary, junior high, and high schools. Principals provided responses to the survey instrument that was developed for this study. Descriptive data were analyzed through the use of frequency distributions. Analysis of variance was used to determine the statistical relationships in comparisons of groups, that is, principals in elementary, junior high, and high schools, and principals in small, small to medium, medium to large, and large schools (based upon ADA) . Analysis of variance was also used to determine the statistical relationships in comparisons of principals and university supervisors. The perceptions of the respondents revealed that few significant differences existed among principals from schools of different sizes or levels. Also, few significant differences were detected between principals and university supervisors. Of interest was the finding that over fifty percent of the principals who responded had not taken the internship for the principalship, and over sixty percent had not served as a cooperating administrator for an intern. ..
