Chamber Music for the Trio of Flute, Clarinet, and Piano: a Bibliographical and Analytical Study.

The author performs regularly with the University Trio, a faculty ensemble consisting of flute, clarinet, and piano, at the University of Tennessee at Martin. This instrumental ensemble combination is musically successful, but not one for which composers routinely compose; therefore, the location, selection, and evaluation of literature has been a substantial obstacle for the trio. The purpose of this study was to identify, locate, and describe the literature that exists for the chamber trio of flute, clarinet, and piano. First, a thorough bibliographical search was undertaken to locate original works or those arranged for this ensemble by the composer. Numerous catalogs, bibliographies, and American and European libraries were searched. The second step was securing the music. A total of 108 works were available and were purchased or were borrowed from the composer, a lending organization, or through inter-library loan. The third step was a search for information about each work and its composer. Fourth was an analysis of the music. Each piece was studied to determine form and style, and to identify the significant features of the composer's treatment of harmony, rhythm, melody, texture, and scoring. The next step was a study of the technical, interpretive, and ensemble dem and s upon the performers. Each piece was graded as easy, intermediate, or difficult. In addition, the following characteristics were assessed independently: rhythm, range, tessitura, and technique for the winds; rhythm, h and span, and technique for the piano. The historical, analytical, and technical information obtained for each piece, along with its source, is given in a substantial annotated listing of these works. Separate chapters present a historical and analytical overview of these compositions and a general discussion of performance aspects for the three levels of difficulty. Though the primary focus of this paper is on original compositions or arrangements made by the composer, a briefly annotated listing of currently published arrangements is included.
