Reversible photochemical reactions can be combined with mass transport in membranes containing carrier solutions to facilitate the flux of the gaseous species taking part in the reaction. These membranes are called "carrier-mediated photodiffusion membranes" and exploit the change in the equilibrium constant with light intensity for their operation. The membranes are produced by differentially illuminating two ends of a membrane s and wich containing the carrier solution. The transport equations for carrier-mediated photodiffusion consist of nonlinear second order differential equations of the boundary value type and a technique based on the method of orthogonal collocation on finite elements is used for their solution.
