This study of march music defines the march in form, style, and function in 19th-century America. A history of the origin of the march, before 1800, in European dance and military practices is also included. A distinction is made between the march as music, and the idea of the march, the latter serving as a common metaphor for the 19th-century idea of social progress and history. The study of form and style involved the examination of approximately 1,800 marches published as sheet music (an estimated 29% of all marches published as sheet music in the 19th century).
