Spectroscopic studies of radiating and absorbing metal atoms generated in the high temperature plasmas from thin silver films vaporized by capacitive discharge provided fundamental information concerning plasma structure and dynamics. Discharge current waveshaping techniques were evaluated for reducing atomic emission detection limits, and for determining the feasibility of atomic absorption measurements in these silver vapor plasmas. The expansion rate of the zone of intense continuum radiation for four different discharge current waveforms increases rapidly with increasing rate of current rise at the start of the discharge.
