In the twentieth century there have been three "waves" of Russian-speaking immigrants to the United States. Unlike that of the first two waves, the language of the third emigration, which dates only from the early 1970s, can still be studied as that of a living Russian speech community. Nevertheless, third-wave emigres have already adopted many new borrowings from English. Various systems for classifying borrowings according to their degree of adaptation to the borrowing language must first be examined and some typical emigre Anglicisms analyzed according to these criteria.
