A method is developed for predicting the stability derivatives of a ship in shallow water. Alternatively the added mass and damping coefficients for horizontal plane motions may be predicted. The method applies particularly to fine ships with large skegs, and to the ranges of oscillation frequency and advance speed associated with maneuvering in shallow water. The hydrodynamic problem is solved by formulating matching inner and outer boundary value problems for the velocity potentials. The problems are systematically linearized on the basis of slenderness, shallowness, low speed, low frequency, and small amplitudes of oscillation.
