Pablo de Olavide y Jauregui (1725-1803) was a prominent figure in Peru, France and Spain whose narrative works have not received sufficient critical attention. The thesis focuses, first, on his six posthumously published novels (1828) of which only single copies are extant, and second, on his apologetic novel El Evangelio en Triunfo (1797) as an immediate antecedent of the former. The first three chapters establish the dominant context for the study of his works: the first one examines their ideological significance within the Enlightenment; the second reviews the critical judgments to which both El Evangelio en Triunfo and the novels have been subjected; and the third supports the notion that the novels are modern ones.
