La Obra Narrativa De Pablo De Olavide Y Jauregui. (Spanish Text) (Peru).

Pablo de Olavide y Jauregui (1725-1803) was a prominent figure in Peru, France and Spain whose narrative works have not received sufficient critical attention. The thesis focuses, first, on his six posthumously published novels (1828) of which only single copies are extant, and second, on his apologetic novel El Evangelio en Triunfo (1797) as an immediate antecedent of the former. The first three chapters establish the dominant context for the study of his works: the first one examines their ideological significance within the Enlightenment; the second reviews the critical judgments to which both El Evangelio en Triunfo and the novels have been subjected; and the third supports the notion that the novels are modern ones. Born out of the rejection of the classical canon, the novels are characterized by the incorporation of the middle class, the narrator's characterization of the fictive world as one divided into hombres beneficos y libertinos and the praise of simple village life in opposition to the corrupt city life. The exemplary and moralistic nature of the novels places them in a close relationship to the Spanish and French moralistic narrative works of the XVIII century. The fourth chapter provides a structural examination of their plot, motifs and topics. A detailed analysis of their discourse corroborates in Chapter V the nature of the novela ejemplar and is followed in Chapter VI by a thorough examination of the longest novel, El incognito. The latter emphasizes the levels of narration, the use of lacrimosidad and tenebrismo and the ideological content. The novels are brought together again, in Chapter VII, in a discussion of events and speech representation and an examination of the use of the present tense. In order to underst and the origin of Olavide's fictive cosmos as represented in the novels, the epistolary structure and the ideology of his apologetic novel are approached and the echoes and similarities between it and the novels are traced in Chapter VIII.
