The basic variables that characterize the classes of waveforms considered for optimization of PWM waveforms are evaluated. Using the Fourier coefficients of the waveform it is concluded that these classes of waveforms are best described by the amplitudes of the jump discontinuities that characterize them. This characterization of the waveforms greatly simplifies the evaluation of the Fourier coefficients when the harmonic components are desired. Through use of this characterization it is evident that contrary to what is widely reported in the literature the degrees of freedom, or the independent variables of the system, are twice the number of the jump discontinuities in the fundamental period of the waveform.
