Hawthorne's unfamiliar fictional worlds in his short narratives entail a familiar everyday world. As readers, we come to accept these fictions as probable by means of our shared underst and ing of literary conventions and of Hawthorne's particular use of them. Hawthorne's fictions become probable, in other words, because of how he engages us in interpreting the relationships among realities that are distinctly different from lived experience and realities that are familiar from within our world of natural and cultural norms--our material world, our historical ordering of events within it, and our ideological justifications for such ordering.
