What are the factors that make the difference in the educational and early occupational attainment of young black adults? Frequently the attainment process of the black youth population has been largely defined by the norms of the white male population (Blau and Duncan, 1967; Sewell and Hauser, 1972). Recognizing this, the present study chose to utilize a more sensitive, cultural context for assessing the young black adults' attainment, the black family and community. The family background, interpersonal, personal, educational and employment factors were all considered in assessing the available resources and the nature of the constraints under which the young black adults lived.
