It is well known that the presence of error in reported time series can distort estimates of relationships between the true variables. Owing much to the formidable methodological difficulties encountered when one recognizes the existence of errors, the most common econometric practice has been to ignore them. The effect of this misspecification, which will depend on the source of the error, should be assessed if one is interested in the design of estimators based on methodological, rather than pragmatic, criteria.
