Adult education and leisure time in the 1970s was characterized by an unprecedented increase in h and craft activities. American interest in and pursuit of crafts crossed all socioeconomic and educational levels. Social science research has focused primarily on the indigenous craft production of isolated populations in America--Appalachians and Native Americans. In addition, an extensive literature exists detailing the history of crafts and the techniques employed. Professional artists and their creative activities have been the subject of psychological analysis and speculation.
