A Profile of Rural American Craftspeople in a Swedish-American Community (Ethnomethodology, Folkways).

Adult education and leisure time in the 1970s was characterized by an unprecedented increase in h and craft activities. American interest in and pursuit of crafts crossed all socioeconomic and educational levels. Social science research has focused primarily on the indigenous craft production of isolated populations in America--Appalachians and Native Americans. In addition, an extensive literature exists detailing the history of crafts and the techniques employed. Professional artists and their creative activities have been the subject of psychological analysis and speculation. Little systematic research exists that attempts to examine the meaning of h and crafting for the non-professional. The purpose of this study is to provide a portrait of small town rural craftspeople in a contemporary Midwestern community. Employing a multi-faceted ethnomethodological approach, the researcher conducted extensive fieldwork in the town of Lindsborg, Kansas. Research techniques included: participant observation, recorded interviews with residents and oral histories. Problems encountered in the course of the investigation are described. A prominent characteristic of the residents is a strong individualism that emphasizes self-sufficiency, independence and thrift. Family patterns reflect the interdependence of all members working for the benefit of the family unit. Contrary to popular opinion, youthful members of the community are self-assured, responsible and skilled. A wide range of opportunities for personal development not found in urban America are provided in the rural setting. Tradition and conservatism reinforce a feeling of continuity. The old and reliable are respected and experience is highly valued as an adjunct to formal education. A strong sense of task, pride in workmanship, and a direct, no-nonsense approach to life are common factors in the rural personality. Like many small towns, Lindsborg struggles to maintain its identity in the face of encroaching agribusiness and urban expansion. By emphasing the uniqueness of their Swedish ethnic background and a continuing arts tradition, the community cooperates to sustain an image of culture amidst agriculture. Craft production is intimately associated in the maintainance of individual and family relationships and a cohesive social structure.
