This study sought to determine whether colleges could improve student retention by improved advising programs. The study had two stages. The first examined the advising/retention relationship and retention patterns of a sample of 31 colleges. The second examined in-depth a case of an improved freshman advising program. The research questions of the first stage were: Do institutions exhibit distinctive retention patterns? Are these patterns stable over successive cohorts? How are graduation rates related to institutional characteristics? Did advising improvements affect retention patterns?
