The history of Title IX at the University of Michigan Department of Athletics.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was designed to displace sex-based discrimination in educational institutions receiving, or benefiting from, federal financial assistance. Shortly after the introduction of the legislation, Title IX debate became centered on inequities between men's and women's intercollegiate athletic programs. Eventually, Title IX became increasingly identified with athletics. Overall, the legislation is one of the most important developments in intercollegiate athletics in the past few decades. To determine the influence Title IX had upon the intercollegiate athletic programs at The University of Michigan, a comprehensive historical inquiry was undertaken. The study covered two decades (1964-84), and employed a case study format. The basic parameters of the study were established through statements of the problem and purpose of the study, and a detailed history of athletics in America, and , more specifically, women's sports, were provided to illuminate the roots of intercollegiate athletic competition. Title IX's path of implementation was analyzed through the study of the nation's political climate and social mood. Subsequent to developing a thorough underst and ing and documentation of Title IX's origins, a detailed examination of legislative associations, specific athletic m and ates and exemptions, and key components of compliance objectives established a foundation for inquiry into The University of Michigan's response to the legislation. Analysis of The University of Michigan's response to Title IX centered on the primary issues, events, and actors associated with the legislation. Incorporation of data on men's and women's intercollegiate athletic programs, from 1964-84, advanced quantitative investigation and analysis. In sum, the study revealed an important component of The University of Michigan's athletic history.
