For Early Modern Printed Biblical Literature in Italian: Lay Authorship and Readership

International audienceThis contribution, at the crossroads between the history of language and literature, the history of the book and the sociology of reading, presents a new reflection on the definition and scope of biblical literature in Italian published from the beginnings of printing until the middle of the 17th century, by questioning in particular the evolution of the profile of its authors and readers in relation to that of its contents. This reflection has nourished the forthcoming publication of a repertory listing the titles and editions that make up the vast field of Italian biblical literature of the early modern period, which has remained largely unexplored for too long. The contribution sheds light on the importance of this new bibliographical tool which offers new paths and methods for fundamental research.Cette contribution, à la croisée entre histoire de la langue et de la littérature, histoire du livre et sociologie de la lecture, présente une réflexion nouvelle sur la définition et le périmètre de la littérature biblique en italien publiée depuis les débuts de l’imprimerie jusqu’au milieu du XVIIe siècle, en s’interrogeant notamment sur l’évolution du profil de ses auteurs et de ses lecteurs en rapport avec celle de ses contenus. Cette réflexion a nourri la publication prochaine d’un répertoire recensant les titres et les éditions qui composent le vaste champ de la littérature biblique italienne de la première modernité, resté trop longtemps et largement inexploré.
