Le « Colombier » à Chézy-sur-Marne (Aisne, France) : analyses préliminaires d'un site inédit du Dernier Maximum Glaciaire

International audienceThe “Colombier” site at Chézy-sur-Marne site (Aisne, France) is located in the southern part of the Aisne department, on top of a slope overlooking the Marne valley. Known from ancient surface collections, the site was identified during an archaeological survey carried out in 2010. The planned constructions did not threaten the discovered site and during four research campaigns (carried out between 2011 and 2014) it was possible to investigate an area of nearly 70 m2 and to collect about 5,000 objects, many of which were associated with anthropic features. The site was covered by carbonate loess deposits dated to the Upper Pleniglacial, which were between 40 and 80 cm thick. The presence of several anthropic features testifies to a fair preservation of the site despite several classical taphonomic phenomena occurring. Nine AMS samples made it possible to date the human occupation(s) at the site to around 18,500 uncal. BP. Reindeer and horse are the only two animal species identified, exhibiting differing hunting patterns. Seasonal information recovered from teeth remains and reindeer antler make it possible to assume that the occupations took place during several seasons from spring to autumn. Apparently, entire reindeer carcasses were brought to the site. The anatomical representation of horse remains is much sketchier and suggests that lower and upper limbs and skulls were preferentially brought to the site. The osseous industry is represented by five objects (four made of reindeer antler and one of bone (horse scapula): possible matrix extraction and a bâton percé (perforated baton) could be identified). The analysis of the lithic material evidences well-structured production organised around blade production intended for the manufacturing of the retouched toolkit, more particularly a large number of transverse burins. Use-wear analysis carried out on these transverse burins makes it possible to determine in an unprecedented way their use as multifunctional tools (for cutting, scraping, grooving), mainly in the processing of secondary animal resources (bone materials and skins). As regards the fossil shells that were discovered (n = 200) at least fifteen species could be identified stemming from the Middle Eocene period: Lutetian and Lower Bartonian deposits outcrop in the immediate vicinity of the site. These shells (gastropods and scaphopods) were used to produce personal ornaments but could also be used as tools (large cardium shells). Over 64 kg of stones were brought to the site by the Palaeolithic people as part of the supply from the local geological range (limestones; marlstones, sandstones). These materials were used for the construction of fireplaces. The analysis of the various oxidation stages of the heated stones makes it possible to estimate theheating temperatures, which were between 300 and 600° C. The study of the main fireplace (KL/20-21) revealed that it was used at least three times. The “Colombier” site appears to be closely linked with the exploitation of rich and numerous sources available in the sector. The site is located, on the one hand, in a strategic place overlooking the Marne valley from which it is possible to observe the mammal faunal migrations and, on the other hand, in a geological environment hosting abundant lithic resources and high-quality fossil shells.Localisé dans le sud du département de l'Aisne, le gisement du « Colombier » est situé sur la commune de Chézy-sur-Marne, au sommet d'un versant qui domine la vallée de la Marne. Connu par des ramassages de surface, le site fut confirmé lors d'un diagnostic archéologique préventif en 2010. L'aménagement prévu ne menaçant aucun des vestiges détectés, quatre campagnes de fouille programmées (2011 à 2014) ont permis d'explorer près de 70 m 2 de surface et de recueillir environ 5 000 pièces, dont plusieurs sont associés à des aménagements anthropiques. Le site est emballé dans des dépôts loessiques carbonatés du Pléniglaciaire supé-rieur, entre 40 et 80 cm de profondeur. L'existence de plusieurs structures anthropiques témoigne d'une bonne conservation du gisement en dépit de plusieurs phénomènes taphonomiques classiques. Neuf dates AMS permettent de caler le(s) occupation(s) du site autour de 18500 BP non cal. Le renne et le cheval sont les deux seules espèces identifiées sur le site, avec des profils de chasse différents. Les informations de saisonnalité apportées par les restes dentaires et les bois de renne plaident pour des occupations lors de différentes saisons, du printemps à l'automne. Les rennes semblent avoir été apportés entiers sur le site. La représentation anatomique des chevaux est beaucoup plus partielle et suggère un apport préfé-rentiel sur le site des membres inférieurs et supérieurs ainsi que du crâne. L'industrie osseuse est représentée par cinq pièces dont quatre en bois de renne et une en os (scapula de cheval) : une possible matrice d'extraction ainsi qu'un bâton percé ont pu être identifiés. L'analyse du matériel lithique évoque une production structurée autour de chaines opératoires laminaires qui alimentent l'essentiel de l'outillage retouché, en particulier de nombreux burins transversaux. L'analyse tracéologique de ces derniers, permet, de manière inédite, d'interpréter leur fonction comme des outils multifonctionnels (employés en coupe, raclage, rainurage), impliqués principa-lement dans la transformation des ressources animales secondaires (matières osseuses et peaux traitées). L'en-semble des coquillages fossiles découverts (n = 200) se répartissent sous la forme d'au moins quinze espèces provenant de la période de l'Eocène moyen : le Lutétien et le Bartonien inférieur affleurent à proximité immédiate du site. Ces coquillages (gastéropodes et scaphopodes) ont servi à la confection de parures mais ont également pu être utilisés comme outils (gros cardium). Plus de 64 kg de pierres ont été mobilisés par les paléolithiques dans le cadre d'un approvisionnement en relation avec le spectre géologique local (calcaires ; marnes, grès). Ces matériaux ont été utilisés dans l'aménagement de structures de combustion. L'examen des différents niveaux d'oxydation des pierres chauffées permet d'estimer des températures de chauffe qui s'élèvent entre 300 et 600° C. L'étude du principal foyer mis au jour (KL/20-21) témoigne d'au moins trois épisodes de fonctionnement. Le site du « Colombier » apparaît étroitement corrélé à l'exploitation par les groupes humains des ressources riches et nombreuses offertes par le secteur. Il est d'une part, positionné sur un point topographique de la vallée de la Marne dominant et stratégique pour surveiller les migrations de la faune mammalienne et d'autre part, au coeur d'un terroir géologique riche en ressources lithiques et coquillages fossiles de qualité.
