It is important to quantify the resistance to overflow. When the section is equipped with a surface protection, the practice is to use the abacuses (e.g. those of CIRIA). On the other hand, it is currently impossible to describe, with respect to its resistance to overflow, a soil constituting a dike section. As a result, it is currently considered in France that "earth dikes do not support overflow". This is why Irstea has developed an in-situ, full-scale overflow simulator.
