This thesis uses techniques of comparative literature aiming to ascertain whether the culture of a country is reflected in that country’s literature (more specifically, its crime fiction). The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part introduces crime fiction as a genre, its development, and compares cultural characteristics of Japanese and Americans. The practical part is a comparison of three American and three Japanese crime fiction novels with a focus on cultural reflections.
