Il presente contributo intende esplorare il valore ideologico, culturale e materiale di alcune sostanze ad uso cosmetico presso la società costantinopolitana nel periodo alto e medio bizantino, a partire dagli esperimenti che portano l'imperatrice Zoe a confezionare unguenti e fragranze (Ms. graec. laurent.
