Guidelines for Recovering and Enhancing the Historic and Contemporary Landscape of Public Places

The role of the public city and its natural and anthropic environment is becoming increasingly important in the defi nition of urban quality. The UNESCO Recommendation on the historic urban landscape (2011) introduces a new centrality on the conservation of urban heritage and highlights ”the need to better integrate and frame urban heritage conservation strategies within the larger goals of overall sustainable development”. The paper proposes guidelines for enhancing public heritage in Cagliari (Italy), where the diffi - culties in managing it may increase the risk of decay. The study highlights the need to improve knowledge through a historic analysis, defi nes strategies for the redevelopment in a network of public buildings and spaces and fi nally presents possible reuse scenarios for the heritage, without threatening its historical identity
