For a ship sailing between destinations on a schedule, having a speed controllerthat can sail the ship according to a speed reference oers extended capabilitiesfor the crew. It is also a necessary tool for sailing the ship, according to anoptimally planned speed reference. A method used for speed control of largesea-going vessels today is PID-control.
