Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) (Gordon, 1975) is a practical course teaching communication skills to parents, particularly listening, assertiveness and conflict resolution. Youth Effectiveness Training (YET) (Hall & Zener, 1981) teaches the same skills to teenagers from their own viewpoint. Both are aimed at improving the quality of family life, and at prevention of serious problems. Research into PET has been largely concerned with attitudinal change, and there is an overwhelming need for investigation of behavioural outcomes.
