The following thesis is a report of a project carried out during 1976 in fulfilling the requirements of the M.Sc. degree at the University of Tasmania. The aim was to design and construct a Fabry-Perot interferometer compatible with the 1 m. reflecting telescope at the Canopus Hill Observatory. Chapter 1 introduces the relevant theory and reviews the development of FP spectrometers in astronomy. Chapter 2 is an outline of the design problems and the solutions reached in the final instrument. The calibration and testing of the various components is also included.
