Correspondence from Capt. William Wood of Hawkridge, Snakebanks, to John Leake dated 1842-1850 concerning his financial distress, debts, loans from Leake, mortgages on his property, attempts to sell "Windfalls" etc.; Leake to take his property and assets in trust (1844), meetings of creditors; some letters from Louis Wood when Wood was ill. Also promissory notes, accounts, letters from John Swan (1844, 1846, 1850) and Henry Priaulx (1844). Wood's letters frequently mention his wife's poor health and his own illness and also include general references: servants (1834-6); sun dial (10 Sept. 1836); ball (14 May 1842); river flooded 350 acres of corn (14 Sept. 1842); rebuilding river banks (Oct. 1842); fire damage in Hamburg (2 Oct. 1842). Captain Wood was paymaster of the 15th Regiment of Foot, retired from the army in 1824 and migrated with his wife and children to Tasmania on the the brig, "Mary Anne", arriving on 25 October, 1829. He received a grant of 2000 acres which he took up at Snake Banks, now Powranna and built the stately house "Woodleigh" where he lived untill his death in 1864. From the Leake Family Papers L1/G1-65
