This thesis describes the synthesis, characterisation and reactivity of a range of samarium(II) and samarium(III) complexes of a modified porphyrinogen, trans-N,Nʹ-dimethyl-meso-octaethylporphyrinogen, `Et_8N_4Me_2H_2`. Various related reactivity themes include the sterically rigid porphyrinogen and the `Sm^(II)``/``Sm^(III)` redox couple. Chapter 1 provides a broad introduction and relevant background on the properties of samarium with respect to the other lanthanoids. General aspects of the organometallic chemistry of the lanthanoid elements are discussed, including: sterically induced reduction, relevant and related chemistry of the modified porphyrinogen, and general considerations of computational techniques employed in this thesis. ...
