Data were collected on 1739 records of Japanese Black calves during the period 1937-2002 at the Department of Livestock and Grassland Science, National Agricultural Research Centre for Western Region, Oda City, Shimane Prefecture. The objectives were to estimate heritability, maternal effect and genetic and phenotypic correlations between birth weight, weaning weight and average daily gain from birth to weaning; to evaluate calf breeding values and to evaluate the genetic and phenotypic trends for these traits.
